Richard BEAVIS RWS
Born in 1824 in Exmouth, Devon, Richard Beavis RWS was the second son of William Beavis and his wife Elizabeth Taylor. Bereft at the loss of his mother, brother and baby sister all in the space of a year, Richard aged eight, found solace in drawing on the walls of his bedroom.
The evident artistic talent of the young boy astonished many. This book traces Richard Beavis' journey from the fishing town of Sidmouth to the Royal Academy in London, The Empire Exhibition, furniture design awards, manor house decorations and travels through France, Holland, Spain, Italy, Egypt and the Sinai all the while painting in water colours and oils.
His most noted achievement being the commission from the Prince of Wales to paint four enormous cartoons in oils, in mirror image, for the Royal Tapestry Works. The tapestries hang in Mansion House, London.
"Full membership of the Royal Watercolour Society was conferred on Richard Beavis towards the end of 1891. With this belated recognition, the letters RWS could be appended to his name!"

"We cannot call Mr Beavis a disciple of any particular school, nor a follower of any special artist: he is a close and diligent student of nature alone, and works out his subjects – and they are varied – with taste, judgement, and skilful execution!"
